Durham County Business Services Division is proud to work with SafeKids of Durham County, a nonprofit organization working to help families and communities keep kids safe from injuries by providing operational support and other resources to assist in achieving our common goal: keeping your kids safe. Based on the needs of the community, this coalition implements evidence-based programs, such as car-seat checkups, safety workshops and sports clinics, that help parents and caregivers prevent childhood injuries.

What fees are associated with my permit application? You can find Durham County’s Fire Marshal Fiscal Year 2022-2023 Fee Schedule here: FY23 Fire Prevention Fees.
How do I pay for my permit? Permit Applications may be paid using a check (personal, cashiers, or Money Order) or online using a credit or debit card. If making a payment via check, please include a copy of the invoice or your permit number in the memo section so the funds can be applied to the correct permit application. Checks should be made payable to: Durham County Office of Emergency Services Please note that our payment vendor charges a 3% convenience fee for payments made online. Returned checks are assessed a $15 Returned Check Fee.

Durham County Emergency Management leads the community's preparedness, planning, response, and recovery efforts for natural and man-made disasters. Emergency Management (EM) spearheads the County Emergency Operations Plan, coordinating all emergency response activities in the event of an incident. EM is the agency through which the County Board of Commissioners and the Durham City Council exercise the authority vested in them during accidents and disasters.

What services does the Office Of Emergency provide to help reduce hazard risks in the community?

The Office Of Emergency specializes in providing comprehensive emergency management services to reduce hazard risks in the community. Our services include developing emergency response plans, conducting risk assessments, providing training and education on disaster preparedness, and coordinating response and recovery efforts during and after a disaster. We work closely with local governments, businesses, and residents to ensure a coordinated and effective approach to reducing hazard risks. Our goal is to create safer and more resilient communities that are better prepared to handle and recover from potential disasters. By working with the Office Of Emergency, you can proactively address hazard risks and build a safer and more attractive community for both employers and residents.

Beginning in 2014, Durham County joined with Alamance and Orange counties to develop a three-county regional hazard mitigation plan, supported and funded by the State of North Carolina. Approved by FEMA in August 2015, the Regional Plan became the official hazard mitigation plan for Durham County, adopted October 12, 2015, and

for the City of Durham, adopted June 6, 2016.

EMS operates ambulances 24/7 and have various special teams, including a Bicycle Team and a Strike Team. Some of the services provided by Durham County EMS include:

Assisting seniors

The Durham County Mobile Integrated Healthcare/Community Paramedic (MIH/CP) program is a noteworthy initiative that helps connect at-risk community members with preventative healthcare and social services. This program was awarded the 2022 NACo Achievement Award in recognition of its achievements.
